Right, and so do opioids and cocaine and any number of substances
which are harmless when consumed in small quantities and dangerously
addictive when consumed in purified form. Which is to say that you
will not become a junkie from the natural opioids in cow's milk -- but
they will help you sleep at night.

The dopamine pathways and the mechanisms that balance appetite have an
important function. But we didn't evolve to deal with frequent, large
doses of purified sugars and the like. Foods that contain them can be
unnaturally rewarding and tempting. They are quite likely addictive.
And they bypass the natural appetite suppression mechanism.

Bottom line: It is next to impossible to get fat eating the foods our
distant ancestors did in the quantities that were available to them,
and it is for many of us difficult not to get fat eating the foods we
eat today.
