I heard a rumor and you know how that goes, that Yellow, Roadway and
Holland are soon to be no more. I know some guys that work for one of
the non-union l.t.l. companies and they are gearing up for the big
closure and getting ready to start hiring. Do you know anything abiut
this?
No I haven't, I'm in the Building Materials & Construction Trades
Division and we, at least in the Detroit area, mainly stick to our own
issues during meetings and leave the other stuff to the BA's. If there
is something we need to know, like maybe a strike support or big
charity event within another division, they let us know.
I worked at Con-Way for a while after moving back to Michigan and
still talk with a guy from there...I'll ask if he has heard anything.
I can tell you that Con-Way almost ALWAYS has a help-wanted sign for
drivers in their front yard, at least two of the three close by here
does, but they always are taking applications. Not many guys stick
around at these terminals because they wear out the lower guys on
their Flex-Wheel and the guys above them are relatively young, like
mid thirties to forties, and will not be retiring anytime soon so they
can pretty much figure on working 15-16 hour days on a fucked up shift
for like.....ever. That's why I left, I was pretty much the same age
as most of the older drivers, save one or two, and seen the writing on
the wall that i would be killing myself for a very long time. Plus, I
don't think their attitude towards driver safety was very high on the
list.....way way behind revenue.
After writing all that.....I did find this on the Teamster web
site........http://www.teamster.org/content/freight-leaders-
overwhelmingly-endorse-economic-relief-plan-save-members-jobs...it is
an older article, but......It looks like the Teamsters were willing to
give back some wages. Imagine that, a Union calling to change a
contract to take less money. How come you never hear anything like
that from some people that scream the unions are the cause of all evil
on this planet? AAANNNDDDD it was THEIR idea. Go figure.
I wonder if they broke a few arms, shanked a few execs, sent thugs to
their houses to harass the families to force them to take these
concessions.
