Hi, I'm currently about to enter the trucking industry as a rookie
driver. I've been in construction for over 30 years and I've decided to
make
the career change to trucking after thinking about it for several years. I
decided on going to school with Stephens Transport after reading on their
website that I would only have a year obligation after going thru their
school. Now I've just completed the first week of a three week school term
and they had us sign contracts. I learned that actually I would have to
work
for Stephens Transport for 5 years before I would be fully compensated for
my tuition, which has left a very bad taste in my mouth. Another reason I
picked Stephens is that they said their solo drivers average 3000-3200
miles
per week, buy now I'm wondering if that is misleading also. Are any of you
guys acquainted with Stephens and have an opinion of them? I have until
midnite Monday to back out of this contract, but I actually feel trapped
right now because I'm depending on unemployment to carry me thru for
awhile
and I think I might lose it if I back out of this deal.
Also I'm wondering about the availability of internet access on the
road. I'm a true internet geek and would hate to not have access. I've
considered getting an airtime card at $60 per month, but I've hesitated
because I just don't know how much internet access is out there. Do most
truck stops offer it and at reasonable rates? How about rest stops?
Thanks for any answers guys.

They lied. Back out now while you can.

Please ignore the comments from this poster -- he's a deadbeat truck driver
wanna-be and menace to the road who wouldn't know an axle from an *** if
asked the question on a multiple choice test.

They advertised a 1 year contract then turn around and say it's 5.
That, I believe, is illegal.

That, I believe, is a stupid statement.

For internet access, most chain truckstops, pilot, TA, Flying J, all
have access at $20 a month.

Uh-huh.

Having been on the road all summer, privately,

Uh-HUH.

I saw a dramatic drop
in truck traffic to the point where all major carriers were NOT on the
road. Only local and regional trucks.

As if you pay attention to the road?

With fuel prices coming back
down, traffic may begin to pick up again. Consider yourself lucky if
you average 2,500 miles a week.

What you really need to do is to find a dedicated run that guarantees
you the mileage every week. I was with CR England and was paid for
2,200 miles if I drove them or not.

What # job was CR England?

And paid for 2,200 miles without driving?

What the ***? So you sat at home drooling over the Powerpuff Girls and
collected a paycheck for doing nothing?

Speaking of, check out their schooling. Main problem with them is,
rookies may wait weeks for a trainer.

And some friendly advice. Never sign up with a company that offers a
"lease" program to rookies. You will get screwed. Royally.

Paranoid dolt.
