Since better weather is just around the corner back up north, it's
time for me to hit the road once more. With a stop in Chicago to see
my banker and chat with them on the account(s).
Then back home to wisconsin where one thing I will do is definitely
get me some better wheels. The old pickup I have is fine but it
wouldn't muster out the summer with the travel plans I have in mind.
I might get as far east as PEI as I've never been in that part of
Canada before. As far north as Anchorage Alaska and as far west as
Honolulu, Hawaii. Finally clinching all 50 states.
I also ordered a new computer. This puppy I've set up with dual 500
gig hd's; quad-core amd phenom; 2gig clock; 2gig ram; along with dual
ntsc tv tuners with tv-out. So when the switch is made to digital tv,
I'll be able to watch 2 tv channels at the same time and record as
well.
I will also be taking plenty of photos on the road and will post them
when I can.
With the price of gas going up you certainly could use a smaller pickup and
don't get a bigger computer get a smaller one and you can start looking for
a smaller computer here:
http://windowsmobile.com
With a smaller computer, like a Windows Mobile device you could post to your
favorite newsgroups from the road. BTW if you find yourself unable to log
onto Google with a PPC just keep looking because there is a way and I know
what it is.
But, if you do not want to use Google, you can also get a newsread for a PPC
so you can use can continue to use "Newsguy" if you wanted to.
With a seperate newsreader, you might even be able to post your photos
literally "from the road."
And will you lose the ability to watch HDTV with a PPC? No, but it will
just take a bit more hardware.
As for directions. You could get the new HTC P3470 with GPS
http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_p3470.htm
Or get get something else with a BT GPS like the Garmin Mobile 10 and use
the Garmin Mobile XT software:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=139&pID=420
Note, the laptop version works on a Pocket PC and all you have to do is use
"Activesync" to put the files onto your own memory card.
Just one word of caution on the above GPS. Once you use the "Garmin Mobile
XT" software you will have to turn the Garmin device off and then back on
before you can use it with "Google Maps for Mobile"
http://google.com/gmm/index.html
or before you can use it with Microsoft's "Live Search" for Mobile.
http://mobile.live.com
(note: the above website is different when viewed with a windows Mobile
device but they give you an idea of how it looks minus the cool "map" part)
or you could get a Sprint Mogul and wait for them to enable the built in GPS
this month and let Sprint tell you where to go with their new "Simply
Everything" plan since you can use a GPS with that.
http://www.america.htc.com/support/mogul/software-downloads.html
The above site states this about the Mogul and the built in GPS:
"HTC is currently developing a separate ROM update which enables the EV-DO
Rev. A and GPS capabilities that are already built into the Mogul hardware.
Sprint and HTC plan to make this software ROM available in early 1Q 2008. "
And don't forget, with the following site, you might be able to take your
favorite radio station "On the Road" with you:
http://www.thestreamcenter.com/pda/
Note, the above site will use WMP to listen to the radio stations. On some
PPCs you can hit the power button to turn off the screen and on other PPCs
you have to program the "hold down" to turn off the screen in WMP. Either
way there is a way to save power by turning off the screen.
Rocky - knows PPCs
