I have been thinking about the salaries promised inthe "go
trucking" advertising and the other folks asking newbie questions. How
realistic are the starting salaries quoted? I can run the numbers to
see that, say, average 60 mph x 10 hr x $.33 = $1188 per week but how
real is it to get the 3600 miles per week all year as the posted
salary estimates? Is OTR driving very cyclical?

I'll tell you this much from experience. You just might spend a lot more
time waiting than you want and it will take away from your available drive
time too.
You might wait hours for someone to load you or wait hours for someone to
unload you or just wait hours for your next dispatch. Not to mention any
waiting for traffic.
I would give you my numbers but I only work 2-5 days a week so my numbers
won't do you any good.
Rocky
That's my point. Dispatch conrols a trucker's income by sitting you
out there waiting for another load. A couple of other folks have
asked about ecoming an OTR driver because of the advertised salaries.
I'm wondering just how real those numbers are for new drivers. I'm
already looking at usefull ways to spend downtime when I'm sitting
around waiting for another load and I have not started training yet.
;-)
Your downtime is gonna be spent in the truck, or in the truckstop.
You will not have the time to be going out and visiting local tourist
attractions like Disneyworld. Specially not with the company owned
equipment. You do that, they find out, bye bye.
Although I got lucky my rookie year. My team driver and I had a load
to orlando. We got in 36 hours early. So I wanted to see a bit of
Epcot. He did too. We parked at Disney for awhile, walked around and
then spent the next day at the truck stop.
In 10 years of driving, that was the only time I had the oppurtunity
to do any sightseeing in a place I could.
I'm really thinking more about using the time time to learn other
things. I think I'll start another thread.
