OT- TV salesmen may lie to you

I've been hearing more and more people repeating a mistaken idea that
concerns televisions. This is a time of year when many people are buying
TVs. In the next few years TV stations will no longer broadcast their
signals in analog, which is how it's been done in the US since TV was
invented. After that date TV statons will broadcast only in digital. Your
TV, if it's more than a few years old will not "understand" the digital
broadcasts. However, your old TV will continue to receive signals just as
it does now if you receive your TV programs from cable TV or satellite.
The only TVs that will not work as they have been working are the very small
number of TVs that are receiving signal only by antenna, like rabbit ear
antennas. I think more than 80% of people in the US receive TV via cable or
satellite. There is no need to buy a new TV because of the switchover from
analog to digital signal. Your cable or satellite company will provide you
a suitable signal through your coax or dish. In fact even if you receive TV
over-the-air from an antenna you can buy a small converter box which will
receive the digital signal and make it compatible with your current TV. The
Feds are requiring that those converter boxes be sold to the public at a
nominal cost, I keep hearing $50, and the Feds are providing a $40 subsidy
for consumers to buy that box. But, once again, you won't even need that
box if you receive TV from cable or satellite.
IIRC, the switchover to digital TV is in 2008, 2009, or 2010. If you have
cable or satellite you don't need to make any changes to watch TV.
