A former Employer lying

I have a friend who just landed a great driving job. The place just let him
go because a former employer lied about him. He sent an email of a list of
bogus things saying that he tore up trucks and got it stuck all the time
when he didn't.
Was wondering what recourse he may or may not have to try to get this job
back?
