Here is a comprehensive list of the software programs and audio programs I
use to keep my MP3 player full. In addition to the programs and the shows I
list there are thousands more available in every conceivable topic or genre.
If you want all Blugrass, or rap, or talk shows about gardening, computers,
cars, or any other subject there are shows for you. You probably need some
sort of high-speed internet connection, but it won't hurt to try some of
this with a dial-up connection instead.

You can get a suitable MP3 player for approximately $50 and up. I ave
several players in various capacity from 256MB to 20GB. I currently use a
1GB player and am able to store enough shows to listen all week, at a rate
of 10 hours of listening per day. 10 hours of spoken content audio, like
radio shows or audio books will need only about 100-200MB of storage, where
songs will require about 3-6MB of storage for 5 minutes of listening. For
about the price of buying a satellite radio for the truck you can buy an MP3
player and listen to anything you want, any time you want, plus be able to
stop/start, rewind/fast-forward.

The mother of all programs is Apple's iTunes. It works on PCs and Macs.
It's a program to find shows, play shows, and music. It connects you to
their iTunes store where you can get spoken, video and music content at a
cost or many items are free.
http://www.apple.com/itunes/ (free)

There are other podcast aggregators, which just means programs that will
automatically connect to the internet and download podcasts when they become
available. Just google for "podcasts"

I use a nice progam called Replay AV
http://www.applian.com/replay-av/index.php
The program is $50 to buy but will work as a free trial. This program is
like a combination of Tivo and the electronic program guide. You can
shedule Replay AV to automatically connect to the internet and record
streaming radio. It will record any show you can find, but it has a
built-in program guide which lest you search for any streaming site, radio
show, or podcasts and record them on a schedule. I use this program for the
very few radio shows I like that don't offer free podcasts. I record
"Extension 720" from Chicago's WGN 720am radio station.

Another program I use is Total Recorder http://www.totalrecorder.com/. It
records any sound your PC can play. It has a built-in scheduler and can be
used to record streaming audio from the net. It costs $18. TR will record
streams of any format (RA, WMP, MP3, etc) and convert them to MP3 or wav
format. It's a really nice, simple program at a reasonable cost. Once you
buy it, you get free upgrades for life.

Another program I use is Streambox VCR
http://www.etplanet.com/download/details.php?file=215 This program allows
you to download multiple audio streams simultaneously. It's no longer
supported, and hard to still find for downloading.

Another program I use, which converts RealAudio files to MP3 or wav is
Streambox Ripper.
http://www.sonicspot.com/streamboxripper/StreamboxRipper011Trial.exe It
also is aboandoned by the author and hard to find. You will not need this
program if you aren't using the Streambox VCR program above.

VERY GOOD POST Scott

And if you want public radio:
http://minnesota.publicradio.org

MP3s? I would recommend something that can do MP3s, WMAs, videos, web
and even has it's own phone number like the device I am on right now.

Rocky - MP3 players can be so much more

Scott, that was an excellent post, thanks!

Rocky, I'm a gadget freak and appreciate cool gadgets as much as anyone. However there are a lot of gadgets that do far more than most users will ever use... for instance what percentage of people actually play the games and take pictures with their phones?

If a media player is just that, a media player that does that well with simple, easy to use controls for most people that would be a better device than one that can do everything including whistling Dixie and phoning home.
