Zeke the 4GB flash players are too new for me to know much about them.
Sansa and Creative have a whole string of new flash players, I don't recall
if they have 4GB players currently for sale or not. I think the Creative
players are Creative Zen Stone and I don't know what Sansa calls their
players. I'll look around tomorrow morning to see what I can find.
I believe Sansa often has an expandable memory card slot in some of their
players. Nearly none of the Creatove players have expandable memory. A
player plus a memory card may be one approach to investigate.
You might browse the engadget blog if you want news of the very newest
players. I generally prefer players at least one generation older than the
current offerring so there are few surprises and the prices are very low.
I have a Sandisk 8GB flash player. It's excellent for mp3 playback--
very good sound quality. It can handle mp3 and .wav as well. I've
found it very reliable, and there's an external charger/input that'll
let it play through your auto radio as well. It can handle video and
photos too, with pretty good screen quality. (I'm not a truck driver,
but I like to have pics and videos of my kids handy.) Also has an FM
tuner, and if you need it for some reason, a built-in recorder and
mic It has a slot for a micro SD card, but it can only be used to
import music, not video or photos.
I tried the Creative Zen, but had poor luck with the one I bought, and
subsequently returned, but that was probably just the one unit.

Hey Scott:
Can you recomment a good MP3 player of at least 4GB that runs only on
flash memory or SD type cards that is of high quality and easy to use
unit?
