Greetings, Quotaholics:
How old were you when you had your first crush on someone else? How
about your first kiss? Do you still remember the person's name?
I'll bet you were elementary-school aged, maybe 7 to 9. And while some
of you may still remember the name of your intended, I can't imagine
many of you still carrying a torch.
Not so for 20-year-old Anthony M. Perone, a former resident of
Bridgeport, Connecticut. ConnPost.com is reporting that Perone, who is
described as a short, slight man with thinning dark hair who now lives
with his parents in Fairmont, Minnesota, apparently has never forgotten
his first love. She's unidentified in the article, but Perone remembers
her well. She apparently broke his heart, and he wrote to tell her
about it.
Unfortunately, his writings weren't exactly what most of us would expect.
Inside the first mailing was a hand-drawn picture showing a heart with a
chunk removed; five drops of blood; an assault weapon and a tombstone
containing the victim's name. It also showed a house with the words
"your house will be destroyed."
The second contained pictures of their third grade classroom; their
fourth grade cafeteria seating arrangements and a swimming match. He
wrote about once seeing the victim cry after hearing her then-favorite
song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from the Lion King. He added,
"Don't worry, I'll see you soon. Your secret admirer. P.S. I love you."
But a few pages later, he had become angry.
"Twenty years you lived a rich life with everything. Money, family,
being popular. It's now gonna end. Your gonna learn about suffering and
having nothing. Pain you will feel. You made my life a living hell a
long time ago. I'm coming for you."
There was a picture of a stick figure holding a woman's decapitated head
in its hands, and it was signed "Death Stalker."
The letter was addressed to his intended victim's grandparents' home,
but the scheme was quickly undone. Not only did he include the class
pictures, which narrowed the field of suspects down considerably, his
own mother also inadvertently helped to interrupt this scheme. It turns
out that he's such a loser he couldn't even mail his own threatening
letter, and he had his mom do it for him. She thoughtfully added the
return address he had omitted from the envelope she mistakenly assumed
contained a letter to a friend.
When police searched his home, they found hundreds of pages containing
what Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Reynolds described as "bizarre
deeply disturbing letters." The letters spoke of killing the victim, her
family and several of their third and fourth grade classmates.
They also seized a backpack loaded with ammunition; an assault rifle
with a scope; and a suitcase packed with glass cutters, binding wire and
a freshly sharpened machete.
Perone has pleaded guilty to mailing threatening letters. While the
sentencing guidelines recommend an 18-to-24 month term, Reynolds said he
intends to seek an upward departure to as much as the maximum 10-year term.
I read the story shaking my head in amazement. Where do these nutballs
come from?
Having injected that commentary, it honestly seems pretty clear to me
that this man is sick, stuck in some time-warp of emotional development.
He also committed some heinous, criminal acts, and it seems from the
evidence gathered that he was seriously considering carrying out his
threats.
What is the right thing to do with someone like this? Is prison
appropriate, or should he be committed to a mental hospital? Does
anyone doubt that he's nuttier than a fruitcake?
Nobody wants this guy out on the street, but he's going to be released
someday. That's inevitable. Wouldn't you rather he receive some type
of treatment that might help him deal with these issues before that day
comes?
Insanely jealously,
Lets hope and pray this guy won't have access to a computer and start
imagining he's a truck driver like someone we know.
