Interstate 94 reopened shortly before noon Monday after parts of the
highway near Alexandria, Minn., closed due to a crash involving two
tractor-trailers that left one driver dead and mail scattered.
The State Patrol said a truck carrying mail was driving east when it
rolled just before 2:30 a.m., blocking both eastbound lanes between
Alexandria and Osakis.
Its driver, Steven Moderow, 45, Fargo, was killed, the Patrol said.
The Patrol said the second tractor-trailer, which was transporting
cars, then struck the first tractor-trailer broadside.
Its driver, Richard Novotny, 62, Evansville, Minn., was treated and
released, the Patrol said.
Crews removed debris from the scene of a fatal semi-trailer crash on
Interstate 94, about 10 miles east of Alexandria Monday morning.
State Patrol Capt. Bruce Hentges said authorities don't know how much
mail the truck carried or where it came from.
Crews did their best to retrieve the packages and letters, which were
scattered as far away as 200 feet down the highway, Hentges said.
"They think they got most of it," but don't know for sure, Hentges
said.
The truck was owned by Freight Master of Eagan, Minn., and was
carrying letters and parcels for express delivery company DHL, said
Richard Gibbs, public relations manager for DHL.
"DHL plans to expedite the forwarding of packages recovered from the
linehaul truck as quickly as possible," Gibbs said.
