Hey brother, apparently we share the same "alma mater",the EO school in
Port Hueneme. Although I wasn't a SEABEE, I was in REDHORSE or ZOOMIE
as you SWABIES used to call us... (for those not familiar that's the
Airforce equivalent).I don't know how old you are but we may have gone
through there around the same time.I graduated in April of 1967 and
then subsequent to three months of combat training in the Florida
pan-handle rotated to "the Nam".When you were there did they have the
EMCO dozers where the operator sat forward of the engine and
immediately behind the blade? Or the Pettibone rough terrain forklifts
with the four position steering selector (front axel, rear axel, crab &
oblique),not to mention the International TD24 & TD 25 conventional
dozers...That's where I learned to drive trucks,on '62 & '63
"Cornbinders" with the old Roadranger trannys...My God, that brings
back memories. Some of my instructors were Petty Officer Kohler and
Chief Robinson.Do those names ring a bell?

I had to laugh my ass off because I was there in 1983 and those dozers were
still there. I came into the Bee's without "A" school and had to learn on
the job as an E-6. But I was a special case and it was very rare that anyone
would come in like that. I was there with NMCB-4. Those names don't ring a
bell but you know thousands of people come and go. I loved every minute I
was there and did lots of work around the base when the battalion was in
homeport. Maybe you've heard of the famous firing range on the beach? Or
should I say in the beach. I also was in charge of the crew that re-did the
helo pad on Reagan's ranch. It is a great base and now they've combined all
the commands into Naval Base Ventura.
