Re: Headlight discipline

Here's the point for drivers with DRLs, stop flashing the damn highbeams.
Don't tell those of use that get blinded by them that most drivers don't
mind a quick blinding. There is no reason to blind anyone with your
highbeams. Besides being unnecessary, annoying, possibly dangerous to hit
someone with your highbeams, it is also illegal. My state prohibits using
your higbeams within so many feet of another vehicle. When you flash the
brights in someone's mirror you are not only being a lazy or ignorant
driver, you are volunteering for a ticket. Now some people simultaneously
volunteer for multiple tickets each day and are ever ready to claim the
tickets are unneccesary, and repeat after me in a hillbilly accent "it's all
just for the revenue", but when you volunteer, you volunteer. Be smart,
heck some days just act like a professional. It might become a habit for a
very few.

The world won't end if another truck driver actually completes a pass
without some fidgety other driver playing with his lights.

here are few problems with your informative post I mostly agree with
most new tractors have lights on all the time
so you can not do the flash on/off thing to tell the driver ahead his
trailer has passed your nose
I find it useful to know this information when I pass
but instead of lights off...most will not mind a quick flash or a call on
the CB to have him pull over if he likes
second...those damn driving lights....they should be covers till they
realty need them
5 minutes to pull over walk around the truck to check things out
...stretch your legs then pull
the covers off because of the total darkness or fog
as for the bulbs..I use a clean old sock to store them in..and for fuses
In my briefcase I have a spot for them
and I also want to know about those idiots that have to have those super
high transformer head lights
and don't how to control them for oncoming traffic even when they are
following you...had to go with expensive
auto dimming side mirrors
now don't get me wrong...the more light the better...I would love to have
a million candle power to see down
the road...and the side if the road...but kill them as soon as you come up
on traffic
they should have a auto dimmer like in my Diesel PU
I found the worst light are from KW/ Pete...the best I had were from my
Volvo..that could be it was a O/O tractor
and no chicken lights
and a Mack has never had descent lights
INT, Sterling, Freight shaker are about the same

You have a license so you should know how to work a headlight switch.
There's nothing to be gained from being the last driver on the road to
turn
on your headlights, especially if you ar driving with your parking lights
anyway. It doesn't look cool, you aren't on a calendar. It looks like
you
forgot to turn on your lights. It won't help in court for you to say
"they
should have seen me even if my lights were off." Your parkign lights
being
on will be evidence you were careless in turning them off, or careless in
forgetting your headlights. The judge will want to know why you thought
it
was dark enough for "parking lights" but not dark enough for headlights.
In
the numerous states that require headlights to be on when using your
wipers,
or when conditions make it dark enough, the parking lights don't count
for
having your lights on, only your headlights count.

Don't flash your highbeams to signal "you've cleared me after passing".
If
your boss assumes you can't operate a headlight switch and puts you in a
truck with daytime running lights, do nothing when passed. It's illegal
to
flash your highbeams, in each state I have looked into, and it's annoying
or
unnecessary. Millions of drivers every day are able to pass without
being
signaled over. Flashing your highbeams just tells the rest of us the ink
on
your license is still wet or this is your first trip in a truck after
getting out of your RV.

When you are parked, turn off your headlights. When someone is trying to
back in to a spot and you are waiting on them, turn off your headlights
if
it is safe for you to do so. It doesn't help anyone back into a tight
spot
if you shine bright lights in their eyes. If you have DRLs and can't
turn
them off, try to steer your truck so your lights aren't blinding the
driver
backing up.

Carry at least one spare headlight bulb with you. The same guy that may
have
shortened the life of one headlight by putting his greasy fingers on the
bulb, may have also installed your only remaining headlamp. When it
burns
out you have only bad options. Better to install a new bulb to replace
the
burn out than bet your life the other bulb won't shortly burn out. I
slip-seat and carry a spare bulb. If I lose a lamp, I install my spare
and
drive until the night is over and I'm back at the shop. I write up the
bulb. If the shop will trade my burn out bulb for a new one, I just put
the
new bulb in a ziploc and leave my spare in the lens. If they won't hand
me
a bulb, I re-install the burn out, pocket my spare bulb and let the
mechanic
install a new bulb. Don't touch the bulb, it shortens the life. If you
do
touch the bulb, you can try washing off your fingerprint with window
cleaner
and a paper towel. It's better to just be careful enough not to touch
the
bulb.

You don't need headlights to back the truck into dock doors unless you
are
still on the street. If there is no advantage to using your headlights
while backing up, and there is no safety reason to leave them on, turn
them
off. The reflections of the bright lights can be distracting.

My procedure since I start driving daily about the same time throughout
the
year is to turn on my headlights when I start driving, even if that means
they come on an hour before I need them. In the spring and summer I
could
leave them off for a while, but it's easier to use the same procedure
every
day, nothing to lose.

I make it a habit that each time I set or release my brake valves I also
touch my light switch and say "headlights on" or "headlights off" aloud
to
verify my action. I also double-check my headlights when pulling onto a
street and starting to go through the gears. When I get on an on-ramp
and
turn on my turn signal, I double check my headlights again. When I turn
my
wipers on or off, I also touch my lightswitch and say "headlights on" or
"headlights off".

If you want to be treated like a professional you first need to act like
a
professional. Develop procedures that you follow all the time. If you
develop procedures for your actions rather than just hoping to remember
the
various tasks in some random order it's easier to recognize you are
forgetting something. If you have a specific habit, when you forget
something you will have a "funny feeling", always listen to that "funny
feeling" or the small voice in your head saying something doesn't feel
right
and then pull over and check.
