I've been keeping track the past year of what type of engine a truck has

this and how about an explanation? I always thought CAT engines were
bullet-proof. Perhaps their fuel system isn't?

Hard to say. Maybe CAT's "bullet proof" reputation leads more drivers
to neglect their pre-trip and/or maintenance... who knows?

I've driven Detroit 60's, Cummins M-11's, ISM's, ISX's and a CAT C-15.
The CAT had it all over the rest as far as I could tell and I never had
a single problem with it over a scant 50K miles.

You could grab a nap waiting for the r's to fall between upshifts but
that baby would pull, sweetlordygeezus it would pull... throughout the
torque range, like a fresh mule that could see there was only one acre
left to plow. If that SOB hadn't been in a 379 I'd probably still be
driving it Driving Volvos turned me into a ***, I guess.
