I was indirectly responsible for saving my neighbour's life last year. I called
my wife on a Sunday morning to tell her I was staying at the stable for another
hour or so instead of coming home for brunch, so she went over to visit the
elderly woman across the road to deliver something. When she got there the old
girl was on the phone with her daughter. She rang off and sat down to eat her
lunch. She told my wife that she hoped she would excuse her but she hd to have her
lunch because she had just had her shot. Before she finished her first bite she
went into diabetic shock. It seems she had been in the habit of preparing her
lunch and then taking her shot so that she could eat right away. That day, she
prepared the lunch, took the shot and then had several phone calls.
If I had come home by noon my wife would have stayed to have brunch and then gone
over to visit the neighbour. Because I was going to be late, she went over then
and arrived just in time to catch her in her reaction and get an ambulance for
her. If I hadn't called to say I was going to be late, the old girl might well
have have died.
