Your method of braking is far different than mine. The term stab braking is
being taken out of content here unless you really jam on the brakes then you
would smoke the brakes no matter what.
I would start down the grade slow say about 25mph. I was loaded to about
109,000lbs on the average. When the truck would build up about 5mph faster
than 25 I would apply steady pressure to bring the truck back to 25 and then
let her drift. Back up to 5mph over then pressure back to 25. My brakes
never smoked and the ABS had absolutely no affect on the braking.
I hope you're kidding about stabbing the brakes so hard that the ABS would
defeat your ability to slow down. I've been down Cajon fully loaded with
close to 80,000 and never had a problem. I used to get a little nervous with
the grade that went down into Laughlin NV before they widen the road. It was
over 6% and two lanes with shape curves. There was no place to turn off
there as you went through the hills and always someone would get behind me
and get pissed. But that was their problem.
You're very lucky in more ways than just one. Usually the only time they
close the scales at Cajon is when truck traffic is backing up. I would think
that since your brake drums were so hot and expanded the brake pads lost
most of their ability to lock the wheel up. You could have cracked the drum
as well.
But it's a good story. But back to reality. If you flew by the scales over
80mph and brakes smoking they would have got you. Besides even if the scales
where open where would you go?
