We turned onto Pine and visited the abandoned Will Rogers
Turnpike (I-44). This is a must see for any
road enthusiast. There are some BGSs remaining. We got some pictures of a
typical OTA sign. It was an exit sign
for OK 66 (with a circle) with a right/up arrow and EXIT 1 MILE. It's
surreal walking on an abandoned road that
carried so much traffic and is now forgotten. Check it out if you get the
chance.
This intrigued me. I looked at a couple of the photos and will look at the rest
later. Why was this stretch of I-44 abandoned? And when? I saw a rumble strip in
the pavement; in Kentucky these didn't start appearing until about 20 years ago
so it looks like this was paved not too long before it was abandoned.
It was abandoned around 2002. We noticed the rumble strips too. The reason it was abandoned is OTA wanted to line up the Creek and Will Rogers Turnpikes. My theory is they wanted vehicles to "accidently" continue on the Creek instead of I-44.
