the lines of google maps or something, but without needing internet

an internet connection and/or come with a CD or DVD with all the data. (It
takes a lot of data to provide accurate mapping of the US, you know.) I
really can't imagine anyone just giving away a package with that much data
for free, either. (*)
Why not? Google, Yahoo, Mapblast, Rand McNally, all give it away for
free if your using an internet connection. Why not a free download.
Because a free download of the entire database would be impractically
huge, and almost certainly a violation of the license agreement between
the website who provides this service to you and the company that
provides the data to them. The way these online services work is, they
only send you the small amount of data any individual user actually
needs for a given task. That allows it to work without making the user
download gigabytes of data, and without TeleAtlas and other data
providers worrying too much about people getting free copies of the
database which they've built at great expense.
I dunno.. there are lots of huge files that folks download these
days... for instance, you can download the complete set of maps for
your car's GPS unit - right?
as far as the database goes... that's easy... you build the database
in a proprietary format such that it is complete gibberish unless the
software knows how to properly interpret it....
