Does anyone know where to download free road map or atlas software.
Something along
the lines of google maps or something, but without needing internet
access to search.
Thanks

You're not going to find any good road map software that doesn't require
an internet connection and/or come with a CD or DVD with all the data. (It
takes a lot of data to provide accurate mapping of the US, you know.) I
really can't imagine anyone just giving away a package with that much data
for free, either. (*)

Why not? Google, Yahoo, Mapblast, Rand McNally, all give it away for
free if your using an internet connection. Why not a free download.

Why aren't you considering paying for the software? These things only
cost about the same as a tank or two of gas. MS Streets & Trips is
user-friendly. Delorme Street Atlas is geeky and lets you add functional
streets (but only minor residential streets) but its interface doesn't
follow familiar conventions, so it could take time to get used to.

I would be willing to pay for it, but $60 - $120 is a lot of money if there
is an
equally good product for free.

* If you're /really/ geeky, check out OpenStreetMap. Feel free to
download the 100GB database and find or write your own software to do
searches and routing with it. (Read this last paragraph with a sarcastic
tone if you want, but I know for a fact there are people geeky enough that
they are capable of and would rather do that than spend $40-ish for a
copyrighted software package.)

I'm not a geeky programmer. I just need local maps for my laptop. I guess
if the price is
now down to $40 (a significant price reduction from the last paragraph) that
would be much better. Thanks.
