Only an idiot would read a book or shave while driving. They get what's
coming to them. I just hope I'm not in their path when they reap. I am
perfectly capable of eating a burger or drinking a Coke while driving. It
doesn't take cerebellum activity. Some people are not. 2 years ago, we had
2 peope killed here because a driver was eating a taco while driving and
lost control. Young, inexperienced driver who hit black ice because he
couldn't eat his taco without looking at it. Learned behaviors that don't
usually require cerebellum involvement.
There are many studies to show that cellphone use while driving is
tantamount to being toxically impaired. The cerebellum is involved,
attention is diverted. One ear is involved, a sensitory organ. It invokes a
portion of the cerebellum. The other person on the cellphone tends to yak
when the other person doesn't respond right away. That also draws away the
attention.
I just want to say that the concept of defensive driving means that
you as a driver are ready, willing and able to be vigilant to the
actions of some other idiot .. and to be able to take evasive action
if need be.
You cede all of this away.. when you choose to busy yourself with
other things - like yakkng on the cellphone...
so whatever "extra" you have that could have been used to be a
defensive driver - you give up when you yak on the cell phone... and
yes.. while you may not be the cause of an accident.. you did not
avoid one - that you might have...
this is a direct corollary to the "damn I'm good mindset".
