Drivers encouraged to avoid Bay Bridge
Toll lifted as eastbound backups grow late this afternoon
_Baltimore Sun_ - August 29, 2008
'Drivers headed to the Eastern Shore are being encouraged to avoid the
Bay Bridge, where eastbound traffic has been jammed because of ongoing
emergency work on the eastbound span.'
'Late this afternoon, the toll for the bridge was lifted to ease
traffic. Toll booths stopped collecting money from drivers at 4 p.m.,
when eastbound traffic backups stretched for about 2.6 miles.'
'About 5:15 p.m., delays started about 1 mile from the toll plaza.'
'Cheryl Sparks, a spokeswoman for the Maryland Transportation Authority,
said officials will monitor traffic flow to determine when the toll will
go back into effect. No backups were reported westbound.'
'Kelly Melhem, a spokeswoman with the MdTA, said drivers should continue
to use alternative routes, such as taking Interstate 95 north to
Delaware, then south to the shore.'
'The authority is keeping a watch on the weather today. Poor visibility
because of rain yesterday caused two-way traffic on the westbound span
to be suspended for two hours in the afternoon during a peak period.'
'Backups began yesterday at 2 p.m. and lasted until nearly 11 p.m. The
worst backup was at 3:50 p.m., when cars stretched 8 miles.'
'Melhem also said some motorists, trying to watch the repair work as
they drive, are causing congestion by going too slowly. The bridge
speed limit is 40 mph.'
'She also said some drivers hoping to shorten their wait are worsening
the backup by getting off U.S. 50, taking local streets and trying to
merge back onto U.S. 50 closer to the bridge. That's slowing U.S. 50
traffic and hindering residents who live in the area, Melhem said.'

Took me 4 paragraphs to realize this wasn't about I-80 in SF, in spite
of the hints that the I-80 EB doesn't have a toll ("gosh that doesn't
make sense") and the fact that I know CA would never, ever lift a toll.
