Bay area it is common for Professors to start companies to take advantage of
the research they have done.   I think Cisco was started by a Stanford
Professor.   He obviously did extremely well in the real world.

My Master's advisor owned a successful testing and research firm, and
used his connections to land many government research contracts.
Several others in the department owned patents worth a sizable sum and
did consulting work on the side. Make no mistake, there are some
professors who couldn't make it in the "real world" or manage their
way out of a paper bag, but others who have expertise, people skills
and business sense and have exploited it to the hilt. And they have
influenced countless others to achieve the same sort of things by
demanding excellence and attention to detail from their charges.
