parallel to US 77 through both towns in the past that would have

I don't have much familiarity with US 77 south of Lincoln, having only
driven on it twice, but just looking at the google map of Cortland,
they really ought to have bypassed Cortland to the west. Just because
the town has to be connected to the highway system does not mean they
have to go right through the center of town. Of course, maybe I ought
to go there once. As for Princeton, I'm not sure there's much of a
town there.
* Beatrice has an official "Truck Route 136," the same for NE 4 and
one for EB US 136 to SB US 77.
I've seen old Nebraska maps which have the road which goes from US 136
to US 77 south of Beatrice as a link highway. As for an official
truck route, I'd have to check it out sometime.
An unusual Truck Route 136 in Nebraska is in Auburn, which circles the
northeast quadrant of Auburn. Going clockwise is Truck Route 136 and
counter-clockwise is Truck Route 75.
* Have some colorful words to describe how Nebraska likes to have two
separate, unconnected highways (at least unconnected by a paved road)
have the same number in the same corridor. Sure I should have planned
the trip ahead more (it was kind of spontaneous), but there is
something irritating about thinking one can take NE 103 from NE 8 to
US 6, and then finding an "END NE 108" at US 136. Need to either
connect the two roads or renumber one of them already.
That is one thing I just don't understand about this state's
highways. I don't know the history behind it, but I would guess that
someone had a grand vision for a transportation system for the state,
only things happened, the system did not get built as originally
planned, and then they discovered that some highways they planned
didn't need to get built because they are in the middle of nowhere, or
at least away from incorporated communities. But they had attached
numbers to the highways, and people got used to the numbers, so NDOR
just decided to keep it, because it would cost too much to change.
