Part of it is I'm sure perception -- US 290 is not a freeway, and the right of way is such that this sign is pretty close to the road. At slower speeds on non-freeways, things like this tend to loom larger.
Anyway, that sucker is like a billboard in proportions -- it's alerting motorists to the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park ahead in Johnson City -- done in Clearview, no less. It must be less than a year or two old, cause I sure don't remember seeing it before in previous trips.
No, I didn't get a pic and yes, I wish I had... it just seemed funny as this it the kind of billboard sized BBS I'd expect for say the Grand Canyon on I-40... not a relatively minor park on a US route... Texas clearly wants us not to miss it... ;-)
The existence of a sign isn't new; there was one there 15 years ago, and I remember it seeming large (although not billboard-looming large).
Since it's Clearview, it's pretty obvious that the sign itself is new, and I guess someone just decided to make it Really Effin' Big.
The LBJ park was so designated at least by 1985 when I toured it, which was after LBJ died, but while Lady Bird was still living there, so access to the ranch was a bit restricted (guys with suits and radios all around).
I think there was a visitors center by the highway in front of the ranch, but visitors just toured the ranch by car. Lady Bird owned KLBJ at the time, which was also the source of most of her income. Good rock and roll station...
