I don't know what kind of GPS unit you have, but here we are just slightly

than halfway through 2008 and the '09 atlases and software updates are

I bought DeLorme Street Atlas 2009 a few weeks ago. I haven't checked it
yet to
see if the new I-40 is listed.

In my experience, DeLorme Street Atlas is years behind...  many newer routes
are shown for at least 3-4 years before they finally catch up, such as the
new US 61 freeway bypass around Blue Grass, IA and CA-210 between San Dimas
and Upland...  shoot, they don't show CA-210 as a complete freeway yet.  Nor
do they show the US 75 freeway bypass around Sabetha, KS which has been open
for years.  There are many bypass routings of US 34 not yet shown throughout
IA...

In Arizona, Nat'l Forest Road 618 is displayed as a major state route -- it
is anything but, it is a dirt road with major washboarding.  For a trip
between Flagstaff and Payson, it will route you on this road as a slight
shortcut between I-17 and AZ-260.  This is the kind of "shortcut" that can
cost you 30 minutes.

You also have some anachronisms like US 85 being shown as a current route
all the way through NM...  US 666 still shows up through several counties in
AZ...

the process for how ANY map - paper or electronic - to be updated - is
not only not real-time but more often than not measured in months if
not years - and I wouldn't bet the house that whoever it is that does
field data or verifies field data is any more careful with paper than
electronic.

The process for updating electronic maps started out to be the same
way that paper maps were done - i.e. - no need to rush ...as the
publishing date for the new version was what determined how long it
would take for new updates to be reflected.

electronic maps - have the POTENTIAL to be updated in a more real-time
fashion but they'll have to change their model - which is based on the
paper map update model.

The newest GPS units now can receive real-time data - not only traffic
but software updates ... AND map updates.... Provided they've built a
process that allows updates to flow from the field to the GPS unit.

I think we're still in the infancy of this... but at some point.. if
we are able to update GPS units in real time for traffic conditions..
would it be so much different to be able to use a similar process for
map data?

but I'm also like MK - I ALWAYS have more than one map source. So I'll
use the GPS but I usually verify it with the paper map.

And finally.. if you like interesting scenarios - check out some of
the auto GPS blogs where some of the real heavy-duty GEEK-types will
take a road trip with multiple GPS units lined up on the Dash.. to see
how they compare...!!!

One main reason I bought a GPS was mainly for the quick glance
reference it affords.
When I'm in a city, I'll put it in street level mode and then I can
see where all the surrounding streets are and where they go. In case I
need an "out".  Like when I was in Boston. Having that map readily
available helped me get around quite a bit.

As a trucker, I relied mainly on directions inside a city to get to a
customer. If i screwed up, then what? Those city maps in any RMN atlas
don't show me what I need to know, now.


I thought you said you retired and were living on a beach in FL.

To set you straight once again, I am retired and I did live in
Kissimmee Fl all last winter. This winter I will be in Phoenix, Az.
