Driving faster than 55 mph can significantly increase fuel consumption and cost more money especially in a gas guzzler. That is making motorists take pause and think about their speed.

The car I drive gets around 27 mpg at 65 mph and 22 mpg at 85 mph.

At 65 mph, an hour of driving would consume about 2.4 gallons.

Going 65 miles at 85 mph would take 46 minutes and consume about 3 gallons.

Half a gallon costs roughly $2. So, if your time is worth $8 per hour or less, then the amount of money you save by driving slower would offset the additional amount of time you spend driving.

In any case, the only way to save a significant amount of fuel is to drive less.
