Maine US 1 Coastal

I have not been to Maine for about 20 years (back in my County Hunting
days...) and when I was here last I don't recall US-1 from Calais to
Eastport being posted as "Coastal" US-1, I seem to recall it as
"Alternate" back then.

Has it always been this way and I just didn't recall it then?

We came in at Calais/St. Stephen (It was too foggy to see the road so
we didn't bother with the Deer Island ferrys) and took US-1 Coastal to
Eastport. Kind of a dingy little town, I didn't know it had
deteriorated this much since I was last here.
