The think is that it is being asked to read miles driven from a car. There
is a standard for data out of GPS receivers, but then you need every car to
have a GPS receiver in a window of the car which is illegal in most states.
Yes people routinely violate the law for their GPS, but making it a
requirement is a different story. So a GPS antenna would need to be
installed on the roof of the car running to a GPS receiver probably under
the dash. Similarly communication link would be needed.
This is more money and complexity than cards used to read your identity
going through a toll gate.
yes.. it would require new technology on cars.. the same way that new
technologies are phased-in already on cars... you don't retrofit...
you charge a gas tax as you always have UNLESS the scanner "senses"
the newer technology.
Yes that is possible and maybe even cheap because GPS is a single chip in
cell phones. It would still be a lot cheaper and easier to just raise the
gas tax so it would be a direct function of gas consumed. When the GPS
receiver quits working in the car, will the Government pay for the high cost
to replace it. My experience is that GPS only last a few years. I don't
know why when electronic should have a much longer life, probably longer
than the life of the car, like the radio in my old Porsche that I just gave
away free to a nephew
Of course there will be all types of way found to make the GPS receiver put
out low mileage. It is very easy to do. Just block the antenna with some
metal except before you go in for gas.
and .. the cost of it .. is incorporated into the cost of the fuel...
just like such technology as credit card scanner on gas pumps is
incorporated into your gasoline purchase.
The card does not need to be integrated into the car. And the security is
handled by the card company. A much easier problem.
all you need is a RFID that transmits odometer... and VIN - no GPS
needed.
new technology - yes... so folks without it pay the regular gas tax
rate and those with it get a "reader" at the service station ...
reading their OD and VIN and calculating the tax.
the problem with not doing anything is that if we end up with plug-in
electric cars - the gas tax is toast...unless you're going to raise it
to astronomical levels and even then as technology gets better and
better ..many folks with plug-in electrics may only gas up once or
twice a month...if they have commutes within the charging capacity of
their cars.
