I would like to put some colored dots on a map showing the routes I've
taken throughout my trip.

Any software available to do this?
Any ideas on how it can be done?

Google Earth will read in way points and points along your route directly
from GPS receivers that automatically collect route information and do way
points. Its easy to get the data in to Google Earth since all GPS
receivers follow a standard for the geographical route data they export (if
any).

Not all GPS receiver collect the data you want, so you need to have or get a
GPS receiver that has route collection capabilities.
