Re: Changes on US 400 in Fredonia

[Mr. Kennedy:]

I was perusing through the KDOT bid sheets that Jonathan has linked
to previously and found a gem that is scheduled for the June 18th
letting

http://www.ksdot.org/burconsmain/contracts/proposal.asp

The project is listed as being on US 400 in Wilson County as a grading
and surfacing project. Upon downloading the plan sheets, I discovered
what was going on.

KDOT is building a roundabout at the US 400/K-47 junction. The new
roundabout will be placed just to the West of the existing US 400 and
it appears to be 200 feet in diameter.

Yup, this project is really sweet. The signing plans, which are pattern-accurate, include detailed designs for four roundabout diagrammatics (one for each approach) plus fairly elaborate detour signing, including one large custom sign for a closure of eastbound US 400.

Apropos of Kansas/Missouri comparisons, the detour signing in this contract has the shields and banners separately attached to the post, while in Missouri this approach has recently been junked in favor of attaching the shields and banners to a large black-bordered orange panel. This is conceptually similar to Missouri's new "enhanced" junction signs, which have independent-mount shields and banners attached to a green sign panel.

These and other changes are discussed in a presentation which, I think, was given at MoDOT's 2008 annual signing conference (caution! 45 MB):

ftp://ftp.modot.org/traffic/2008%20Annual%20Sign%20Meeting.ppt

The US 400 roundabout project has KDOT project number 400-103 KA-0484-01 ("400" for US 400, "103" for Wilson County, "KA" is--I think--a funding code, and "0484-01" is specific to this contract--there would be an 0484-02, 0484-03, etc. if it were part of a much larger project being built over multiple contracts).
