I'm not sure many tourists will take advantage of these options, since the
ferry really is best-suited for local residents taking their own vehicles.
For the majority, interisland travel by plane will probably be more
economical (despite the disruptions caused by the recent demise of one of
the three major interisland airlines, and financial troubles facing
another), and about as quick even with airport security and rental agency
dropoff/pickup hassles. Still, for ferry geeks like me, the option of
taking a rental car on the ferry has some appeal.
I was looking into taking the Superferry (as a passenger with no car)
from Honolulu to Maui in July. It would be a 6:30am departure from
Honolulu and an 8pm departure from Maui to go back on the same day, with
the trip taking three hours each way. The Superferry price quoted was
$49 each, and a quick look at flights on Expedia showed $157 per person
as the cheapest.
