There are a lot of ways to create the electricity to power the grid
(including many renewable sources). Trickle charging will not create
a big impact on the existing grid if done at night or if load
levelling can be achieved by vehicle-to-grid storage of excess
capacity in the day (car owners "rent" a portion of their battery
capacity back to the grid for a fee or credit via a "charging station"
at work, at commercial locations, or at home).
Most studies I have seen indicate a favorable balance of operational
cost of plug-in hybrids versus an ICE (if the cost of the vehicle is
taken out of the equation). The economic killer now is the battery
pack cost. Solve that one and the PHEV becomes a no brainer. The
Project Better Place model uses a "cell phone" model to rent the
battery pack to the owner under a service agreement.
