Assuming you can get 300,000 miles out of a conventional gasoline truck, how
many times will the batteries have to be replaced for a plug-in hybrid in
that time period?
There's this person on the Star Tribune transportation blog that keeps
insisting in the future that we're all going to live like Europeans in small
flats and walk or bike or work. I don't think he's a troll, just niave or
myopic. The only reality is in the future gasoline is going to be more
expensive and batteries and other technologies less, and Americans are going
to continue to love the freedom cars, so eventually we'll reach the point
where we're driving on batteries or fuel cells or something else.

AFT Trinty Power Corp has produced a hybrid SUV that out performs
comparable gasoline SUVs in all models.
The XH-150 runs up tp 87 mph and up to 40 miles on a single charge.
If your commute is less than 40 miles a day, most days you would not
use any gasoline.

I'm surprised people aren't talking about nanotechnology. By 2020,
Ford insists that its vehicles will be able to achieve up to 40% more
MPG with the standard internal combustion engine, applying
nanotechnological advances to their vehicles. SUV's could lose up to
750 pounds over the next decade. Stay tuned...

People will still want SUVs to carry their groceries or haul two
gallons of paint?
Oh, this is America...
--
I don't worry about MPG or gasoline prices. I bike and use mass
transit. Sucks to be everyone else with hulking SUVs and inefficient
vehicles.
people will still own and use SUVs as a second "family" car but their
daily, 5-day a week driving habits might change.. the web makes
finding carpools a trivial exercise now days...Van pools, commuter
buses, etc..
and it's not the end of the world.. for many folks altering their solo-
driving habits one or two days a week will trim their gasoline costs
to what they were before prices went up.
