Gee, if it's garbage that people normally have difficulty disposing of,
can it really be considered "theft"?

It used to be that restaurants would pay someone to take that stuff away.
Now, they are selling it as an economically valuable product with a market
demand and just taking it is no different than walking out the front door
without paying for your meal.

Used cooking oil is traded on the same exchanges that trade oil and other
commodities. The price of used cooking oil has risen dramatically since
trading and speculation started years ago. This means that any used cooking
oil has an inherent value set by exchange traders. Taking the cooking oil
from a restaurant without paying for it is a crime just like any other
theft.
