Old meters mean doubling the price at the gas pump

The NYT had an article on a gas station with analog (mechanical) pump
dials. Because of the rapid increase in gas, the dials can't handle
today's high prices. They are set at half the price (e.g. $2/gal) and
then the final readout is doubled. There is a backlog in upgrading
the pump meters.
I am surprised at the number of old meters still in service that these
articles describe. I knew of only one, at an Exxon station on US 1 in
NJ. That station apparently has closed, don't know why.
