You can have rail pick up the containers from the port and move them
inland to say a Wal Mart Warehouse distribution center - let's say
it's an entire load of hockey gloves or 22 inch LCD TVs.
At the warehouse they unload the containers and stack the on the floor
where they are then broken up and put in dozens/hundreds of trucks to
get them to the specific WalMarts - "just in time".
Many of the trucks that people see on the roads are trucks taking
goods to the final destination - like a retrail store, or a 7-11 or a
WaWa and nary a train is seen for this part of the delivery cycle.
An interesting trend is for the warehouses to be located closer to the
ports of entry, rather than inland. Containers are handled by local truck
from the port to the warehouses, where they are restuffed with mixed goods
destined to individual stores. The containers are then handled by truck to
nearby stores, but are mostly handled by rail to close to their
destinations in other parts of the country. The final mile to the
individual stores being again by truck.
An example of the above is Savannah, GA, where Walmart, Dollar Tree Stores
and Home Depot have all opened distribution centers close to the port.
