Sorry if I was confusing people. I know California has a seven
character format due to there being over 37 million residents there.
What I was wondering was why when they started using seven characters,
they did "1ABC234" instead of "ABC1234" like a few other states have
done. Yes, Cali plates do stand out. It looks like this format has
been in use since 1980.
Texas, with its huge population, managed to hold out until 2009. Wow.
When I lived in New Jersey, the current plates were just coming out.
"ABC1234" and "AB 123C" were both formats being used, but it looks
like they went back to "ABC 12D" for now.
New York is one of the few states I know of that not only changed
their plates (to the current "ABC 1234"), but required every resident
to switch to the new plates.
Back to AZ. There are new registration stickers that combine the month
and year on one sticker. The month is written sideways, on the left
side of the sticker. The "Freedom" plates I have seen are one of over
20 different kinds of plates available in Arizona. It's interesting to
note, as a sports fan, the Diamondbacks are the only one of the pro
sports teams to offer a license plate. (No Cardinals, Coyotes, or Suns
plates?)
