Nope. It's been done numerically. The original plates back in the 80s had 1
as a prefix. The current lot start with 5.
Actually the current issues start with a 6, commerical vehicle series
start with an 8.
Someone asked why was it done? That should be obvious - they ran out of
numbers. When they ran out of the original 3 letter/3 digit style, they
reversed the order to 3 digit/3 letters. Then began adding the prefix as 7
places.
Since regular issue California license plates stay with the vehicle
forever, the DMV never reissues a standard license plate number, even
if the vehicle is sold, junked, removed from service or leaves the
state permanently. That is why CA went to seven digits.
For instance the 1960's LLL-### gold on black is still a current
California plate for vehicles that were originally issued those plates
30+ years ago. See them all the time. Plate series even earlier than
that are still valid for use.
