Expect a government proposal this summer to reduce gasoline prices
*and* pay for the bailout of the financial services industry. As
a bonus, the metric system would make its way into another area
of American life. The plan would work this way: gasoline prices
would no longer be quoted in dollars per gallon. Instead, they
would be quoted in euros per liter. This step would instantly cut
the quoted price of gasoline by one-sixth. Only credit cards and debit
cards would be accepted for payment. The use of the euro would
counteract any subsequent tendencies toward an increase in prices,
given that the euro continues to climb in value against the dollar.
A small tax would be placed on the foreign exchange fees imposed by
most credit and debit cards. That tax money would go into a fund to
pay back credit extended by the government to Wall Street investment
banks. Motivated by the apparent lowered price of gasoline, and improved
liquidity in the credit markets, the sale of SUVs, pickup trucks, and
similar low-mileage (or, by this time, low-kilometrage) vehicles would
be expected to increase greatly, thus also providing a boost to the
domestic auto industry.
The NMSL would be also re-established at 100 kilometers per hour, thus
making people believe that they are traveling faster.
The plan would be called WMD, short for "We Must Drive!"
See? Lowered gas prices ... Mission Accomplished!

Works real well until you actually have to *pay* for the gas, and you
try to swap your dollars for euros at the local currency exchange. I
propose we invade all international currency exchange facilities in
the U.S. There's got to be some WMD in there, somewhere!
