Avenue(http://tinyurl.com/5godx6) is being rebuilt. The project started
in March and is progressing in earnest now. The current structure is
precast concrete and will be removed before a new bridge is built. This
will be done in the half-and half style that most bridge rebuilds are
done around here, so as to maintain some sort of traffic flow,
If you look at the image in the link, you'll see 4 expansion joints-the
current demolition has taken out the west side of the bridge south of
the 2nd expansion joint, counting from the north. Traffic is being
maintained on the east half of the bridge in two lanes separated by
Jersey barriers. The lanes are 11' wide. Vineyard Ave. is closed under
the bridge.
It'll be interesting to see what goes up in place of the current bridge.
This is a rather unique prestressed structure-built in 1937; it was
classed functionally obsolete-it carried 4 lanes with no shoulders.
Incidentally the railway overpasses on New Paltz Road featured on my
blog(http://theexperience1.ottoyamamoto.net/index.php?p=51) date from
1914 and are classed structurally deficient.
