Re: Crashes vs. Congestion - What's the Cost to Society?

Sorry that you want to keep your head buried in the sand. You might
want to actually drive on a real congested highway to see what
conditions are really like. Either that or, as someone else put it so
well, you didn't get enough turkey and gravy last Thanksgiving (green
beer last St. Paddy's day?) and need to chill. Adults throwing
tantrums isn't a pretty sight.

I took a quick look at your reference. Avoding rear-enders by
signalling the driver. Yes, that will help if the driver is
_inattentive_ and getting too close. But as I said before and you
refuse to believe, most drivers WANT to be up close, they DON"T want
to observe safe following distances as we were all taught to do.

Tell me, after a crash, how many drivers truthfully admit to the cop,
"oh yeah, I was following too closely", or "oh yeah, I was trying to
beat the light" or "oh yeah, I knew those cars were coming but I
figured I could beat them."

What exact products are coming to the market and when will they be
out? Will they be mandated safety items or options? Will they be
tested in field trials before widespread release?

Anyway, I stand by my prior posts. NO technology can compensate for a
grouchy motorist who had a fight wtth wife, whose boss yelled at him,
whose kids are driving him crazy, is too tired or too drunk to be
driving, or looks at driving as a competitive sport. Those are things
responsible for many crashes. Every article on this subject
concludes, in various words, "the nut behind the wheel".
