'"People aren't thrilled by paying tolls, but that's no different
than
any other form of taxation," says Barry Schoch, a consultant heading
Pennsylvania's effort to put toll booths on I-80, which is now free.'

This man would tax the sun if he could figure out how to do that.

Conklin..you admit that the gas tax has lost much of it's value -
correct?

so .. on a given section of road .. do you believe that the current
gas tax collected is enough to pay for that roads maintenance?

aren't you the same guy that advocates raising the gas tax?

would you call raising the gas tax for roads - "double" taxation?

Only if the state did not pay back ALL Federal gas tax revenue used to
design, acquire and build the interstate prior to levying a toll (tax)
on those using it afterward.

If they don't then George is right; motorists end up paying twice for
the same road.

Of course the goal of tolls is to put the money in non-road projects.

....." State highway and road construction funds are critically short
right now, but several Dallas County projects could continue on
schedule thanks to millions of dollars that have rolled in from the
State Highway 121 toll road,

......
TxDOT announced recently that it planned to freeze new road
construction projects in the state from February through September
because of a shortage of federal highway funds and gas tax revenues.

Without toll road money, Dallas County and North Texas would be in
much direr straits, Mr. Morris said Monday.

He praised North Texas transportation planners and elected officials
for pushing through the Highway 121 toll road - a project that was
highly controversial when it was proposed.

"If this region had not taken the leadership it did on toll roads ...
we would be in exactly the same position as the rest of the state,
which is dead in the water," he said. "
