The next massive freeway project for southeast Wisconsin, reconstructing and
expanding I-94 from the state line to the Mitchell Interchange, comes with
equally massive sticker shock: $1.9 billion, the biggest price tag in state
roadway history.

State Transportation Secretary Frank Busalacchi shared that hefty cost
estimate Thursday when he made public the preferred plan to expand the 35
miles of freeway from six lanes to eight."

This highway has been resurfaced every ten years or so for as long as I can
remember.

The Plainfield Curve (on I-43/94 a short distance northeast of I-894) sneaks
up on a LOT of people and re-engineering it is a 'must do', too.

Wow.  How many vehicles use I-94 per day, between the WI/IL border, up
toward Milkwaukee's main airport?  Studying a traffic count map a few
years ago, I recall somewhere around 75,000 vpd around the state line,
gradually increasing up to 140,000 vpd, but I know my numbers are
definitely off.

If the state can fork up the money, that's great.  It's too bad that
CalTrans doesn't have the money to expand I-80 between the eastern
stretches of SF Bay Area and the Sacramento region.  I'm using I-80
for a comparision, since I-94 links together two major metro regions;
Chicago and Milwaukee.  As a result, the freeway is well overloaded;
the least travelled stretch of I-80 between the Bay Area and
Sacramento is somewhere around 125,000 vpd, (while the stretch between
Davis and Sacramento carries about 145,000 vpd on only 6 lanes).
There's only 6 lanes, and on Friday's, that count can skyrocket to as
high as 160,000.  It's no wonder that a drive from SF to Sacramento
can easily take at least 4 hours on a Friday afternoon, which is
normally a 1 hr/20minute drive without traffic.

One more question.  How many lanes are available along I-94 in
northern Illinois?

Is that all? Sheesh. Where I used to live in cincinnati, there is a one
mile stretch of road that sees 35,000 vehicles PER HOUR!

I'm going to assume that you're exaggerating on purpose, considering
that the vast majority of freeways in Los Angeles don't even top
35,000 vehicles per hour during peak rush hours.
