Back in the '80's Cincinnati got hit with a nice one.
I was sitting in my favorite chair and suddenly heard coming from the south
what sounded like a freight train. All it did was rattle the house for a
few seconds as it moved on up north. Our dog was like totally freaked out.
Epicenter was Sharpsburg, in Bath County, Ky. I was home from college on summer
break and was taking a shower that afternoon. I felt the big "thump" and my mom
came running into the bathroom to see if I'd fallen and hurt myself. Upon
assuring her in the negative, the next stop was the basement, where my brother
was always into something and she was checking to see if he'd blown something
up. Being assured of the negative in that regard as well, the Lexington
television stations came on a few minutes later with the news that we'd had a
quake. Even though the epicenter was well to the southeast, Cincy/Northern Ky
got the brunt of the major damage.
I remember that 1980 quake quite well; it was my very first one. I was
an undergrad at the Univ. of Kentucky in Lexington & living in a
studio apt. All the windows were very seriously rattling. I ran
outside & discovered all my neighbors were running out as well.
