No excuse for that behavior, there are alternatives:

1) Plan ahead and bring a buddy,
2) Pick up a hitchhiker,
3) Do what they do in Seattle where the same problem comes up (some
exits appear to only be accessable from the reversable express lane
and/or are HOV only): Detour via surface streets.
