Avoid going through downtown. Take the 255/270 bypass on the
southside. Much quicker and higher speeds.

Downtown shouldn't be a problem in the middle of the night. I drove through
downtown StL on I-70 at around midnight once, had absolutely zero problems
and got to see the city and the Arch for the first time. As for the trip,
definitely stick to the freeways since it is a night trip, just in case you
run into any problems.
