how about this? Implant a chip into every pair of shoes.
So, what does it matter if a shoe knows exactly where it is? That
hardly matters to a shoe. I don't see how the wearer benefits from
a smart shoe unless that information can be shared with the wearer
somehow. That means some kind of handheld or human mounted device
that talks to the shoes. So, why not just put the GPS chip into
the device rather than the shoe?
The example of someone wanting to know where their kid is needs
more than just a GPS chip. The GPS doesn't tell anyone else where
you are at, it only know itself where it is at. What is really needed
is some kind of telemetery or data link. That is a much harder problem
to solve from a logistical standpoint. You have antennas, receivers,
transmitters, need for power, security, access, data terminals, etc.
If you have all this infrastructure, you don't need a GPS chip. In
the example of the lost child, if the child is transmitting (which
they would need to in order to send out the GPS coordinates), one
could simply triangulate the radio signals from 2 or more receivers.
In fact, that could be more accurate than a GPS, and if one is indoors,
the GPS might even be unable to see any satellites.
So, forget the conspiracy. A GPS chip by itself is of little value.
The value comes from being able to uplink and use that data. And
that doesn't require having a GPS chip, there are other ways of
getting that data.
