As a consequence of providing those new elevations over Cameron Run and
over Telegraph Road, about 3,200 feet of the Beltway will have its grade
raised in the range of 4 to 5 feet. The segment will be widened from
eight lanes (four each way) to 12 lanes (3-3-3-3). The only way to do
that with the current highway is to construction-stage it with a 3-lane
each way situation on that segment for a year or more during
construction.
How will the temporary convergence/divergence of the local/express
roadways west of the US 1 interchange be handled after the Inner Loop
bridge is brought into use?
A temporary 4-lane connector each way will connect the permanent
construction to the original construction. The signing plans show
successive diagrammatic overhead signs on the Outer Loop approaching the
divide.
Short of building the local roadways with four lanes each way, with one
lane each way not being used in the completed highway, they won't be
able to maintain four lanes each way during construction.
The schedule graphics for the VA 241 interchange show several C/D
roadways and ramps that could have been adapted for temporary mainline
use. I wonder if such adaptation would be considered.
Not nearly long enough to pass through the whole construction area.
Plus, the interchange ramps and C-D themselves have to be maintained as
they are rebuilt.
