Re: Interstate numbering if Maryland, DC, and Delaware had become one state

At this point, you're asking Baltimore to give up its hard-earned even
2di to give two to Washington. That's not going to happen. I would
say with a fair degree of certainty no city will give up a 2di from
this point forward - has it even happened since the end of the
suffixed routes? What I could believe is extending I-68 along I-70
and then sending 68 to Washington - 370 becomes 368. If US 50/301
will ever get their secret Interstate signed, it would be as a 2di.

In general I am opposed to changing long-standing Interstate route
numbers, and to adding overlaps of Interstate route numbers on the same
highway, but this proposal may have some merit.

Currently I-68 is 116 miles long between I-79 at Morgantown, West
Virginia, and I-70 at Han***, Maryland. The I-70/I-68 overlap would be
52 miles between Han*** and Frederick, and there would be 32 miles of
I-68 between Frederick and I-495 at Bethesda. Of course, the I-270 Spur
would need to be redesignated also.
