What's with the signing of "Alternate" Interstate highways in
Wisconsin? I've noticed lately an increase of signs such as
"Alternate" Interstate 39 and "Alternate" Interstate 94, posted on
Eastbound US 12 east of Madison, and "Alternate" Interstate 39, 90,
and 43 signs around Janesville and Beloit. (Sorry, no photos, as I'm
usually working - driving a bus - when I see these signs.) As these
are posted on 2-lane State Trunks, just what exactly *is* an
"Alternate" Interstate? They can't have been approved by AASHTO.

Anyone notice if my wish came true yet? I'm waiting to see some "ALT
US-41" signs go up on WI-175. ;)

I thought I saw one, but I can't be sure...

I'm not close enough to check, though it wouldn't surprise me in the least.
